French Polynesia - French Polynesia, with its 118 magnificent islands, is spread over a water surface as large as Europe. The 118 islands of this French territory in the Pacific are divided into five island groups. In the western Society Archipelago lies the largest island, Tahiti, home to the modern capital, Papeete. Most of French Polynesia’s population lives here. The Tuamotu Archipelago in the center consists of a large collection of paradisiacal coral atolls. The cradle of Polynesian civilization is found in the Marquesas Islands in the northeast, near the equator. In the southwest and southeast lie the Austral and Gambier Archipelagos, respectively. The largest islands of French Polynesia, such as Tahiti, Moorea, and Bora Bora, are so-called ‘high islands’ — volcanic in origin, with rich flora and fauna, fertile green hills with valleys and waterfalls, and stunning views. You will find beautiful beaches here, some separated from the ocean by coral reefs. Each archipelago has its own atmosphere and character. However, ancient traditions are honored everywhere, with music and dance playing an important part of daily life.
