Niger - Agadez is a thriving market town and a hub for the transport of uranium mined in the surrounding area. It is also a center for the trade in silver and leather goods. Agadez in Niger is often compared to Timbuktu. Both cities share a rich history as centers of trade and culture. Agadez is a fascinating city to explore and is considered the gateway to the incredible Aïr Mountains and the Ténéré Desert. Highlights include the Grande Mosque and the Palais du Sultan. The Grande Marché is the liveliest place in town and offers visitors a glimpse into the many cultures that coexist and trade here. You’ll see Tuareg nomads selling camels and other livestock. Hausa traders wear long, colorful robes, and the Fulani are recognizable by their large, Chinese-style hats. The old quarter of Agadez consists of narrow streets with traditional mud-brick houses where artisans produce and sell their crafts.
