Yemen - Yemen is an Arab country located in the far south of the Arabian Peninsula. The capital of Yemen is Sana’a, located in the mid-west of the country. According to legend, Shem, the son of Noah, founded the city of Sana’a. Sana’a is often referred to as the largest open-air museum in the Arab world. The city has existed since the 3rd century, though it is likely that older settlements existed at this site. In 1988, the Old City of Sana’a was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city continues to expand. Neighborhoods where barely anyone lived ten years ago are now fully built up. Because rents are excessively high, people try to save or borrow money to buy their own plot of land. They are free to build on it however they wish. Only in the Old City are there building regulations, where construction and restoration are only allowed using red brick, in order to preserve the city’s characteristic appearance.
