Belize - Belmopan is the capital of Belize in Central America. With only 12,300 inhabitants, it’s one of the smallest capitals in the world. Located 76 meters above sea level, just east of the Belize River and eighty kilometers from the former capital Belize City, Belmopan lies in the Cayo District, which it has served as capital of since 1990. The city was built after Belize City was nearly destroyed by Hurricane Hattie in 1961. Authorities decided that having a capital at sea level was too risky and chose to build a new one in the geographical center of the country. Government offices were relocated to Belmopan in 1970, officially making it the nation’s capital. Until 2000, Belmopan was governed by the Reconstruction and Development Corporation. A 1999 referendum supported the creation of a city council, which was installed in 2000. Since 2006, Simeon López has served as mayor.
