Bhutan - The Tiger's Nest, also known as Paro Taktsang, is a breathtaking monastery complex built high on a steep cliff above the Paro Valley in Bhutan. This sacred site is renowned for its dramatic location and is one of Bhutan’s most iconic landmarks. The monastery sits approximately 900 meters above the valley and is accessible by a challenging 3-hour hike from Paro. Visitors can also ride horses or mules for part of the climb. According to Bhutanese legend, Guru Rinpoche meditated in the caves of the Tiger’s Nest in the 8th century. He is revered as the founder of tantric Buddhism in Bhutan and is said to have landed on the cliff riding a tiger, which explains the name. The monastery complex includes several temples and monks’ residences. Built from wood and clay, the structures are beautifully decorated in traditional Bhutanese style, with vibrant paintings and woodcarvings. Upon arrival, visitors are rewarded with spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and the Paro Valley. The view from the cliff is truly awe-inspiring and evokes a sense of peaceful seclusion. Tiger’s Nest is a major pilgrimage site for Buddhists and draws spiritual seekers from around the world. It houses sacred relics and serves as a place for meditation and prayer.
