Bhutan - The Punakha Monastery, also known as Punakha Dzong, is an impressive fortress-monastery located in the Punakha Valley. It is one of Bhutan’s most majestic dzongs, rich in history and cultural significance. Built in the 17th century, the Punakha Dzong is a masterpiece of traditional Bhutanese architecture, characterized by its whitewashed walls, wooden balconies, and golden roofs. It stands at the confluence of the Pho Chhu (male river) and Mo Chhu (female river), highlighting its spiritual importance. The complex includes vast courtyards and gardens. These large courtyards are often used for festivals, ceremonies, and public gatherings. A striking feature is the beautifully gilded stupa located in the central courtyard. Inside the dzong, there are numerous prayer halls and chapels. The main prayer hall, known as the Kuenray, is decorated with murals that depict religious and historical stories. Other important shrines include the Machey Lhakhang and the Khothnag Lhakhang. The dzong also houses the throne room where the coronation of Bhutan’s kings takes place, giving the Punakha Dzong both symbolic and political significance.
