Brunei - In the capital Bandar Seri Begawan, two of the most impressive religious buildings in Southeast Asia are located: the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque and the Jame' Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque. Both mosques reflect the wealth, Islamic tradition, and architectural ambition of the sultanate of Brunei. The Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, built in the 1950s, is often regarded as one of the most beautiful mosques in the world. The building is named after the 28th Sultan of Brunei and combines Islamic architecture with Italian Renaissance influences. Its golden dome is covered in pure gold and shines above an artificial lagoon surrounding the structure. A marble minaret and a replica of a 16th-century royal barge in the lagoon enhance its majestic appearance. Especially at sunset, the mosque is beautifully reflected in the water, creating an almost fairy-tale-like scene. The Jame' Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque is more modern and was completed in 1994 in honour of the current Sultan of Brunei. It is the largest mosque in the country and one of the most important religious buildings in the region. The complex features 29 golden domes, symbolising the 29th Sultan, and four imposing minarets. Inside, the interior is richly decorated with marble, mosaics, and enormous chandeliers, creating a sense of grandeur and serenity. Together, these two mosques form a powerful symbol of Brunei’s Islamic identity and the role of religion in daily life. While the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque is especially known for its elegant historical beauty, the Jame' Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque represents modern splendour and national pride. Both buildings are among the most impressive religious monuments in Southeast Asia.
