Brunei - The famous water village of Kampong Ayer in Brunei is often called the “Venice of the East.” This vast settlement stretches along the banks of the Brunei River and consists of dozens of interconnected villages built entirely on wooden stilts above the water. Kampong Ayer has been inhabited for more than a thousand years and forms the historical heart of Brunei. While the modern city has developed on the mainland, a traditional community continues to live here. Houses, mosques, schools, and even police stations are built on stilts and connected by a network of wooden walkways. Residents also travel by small water taxis, which are an essential part of daily life. Despite its traditional character, the water village is surprisingly modern. Many homes have electricity, running water, and internet access. The government has invested in facilities such as schools and healthcare centres, ensuring a comfortable standard of living. A key landmark is the elegant Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, which is beautifully visible from the water and forms a symbolic connection between old and modern Brunei.
