Ghana - Ghana’s Atlantic coast is lined with old forts and castles built by various European powers in the 17th century. The Cape Coast Castle was built for the slave trade and is one of the most impressive of the old forts in Ghana. It was originally built by the Dutch in 1637. Later it was expanded by the Swedes. Finally, the British took control in 1664 and turned the castle into their colonial headquarters. It remained so for 200 years until the British moved to the capital Accra in 1877. The Cape Coast Castle is now an excellent museum with information about Ghana’s history, the slave trade, and local culture. Tours are a "must" and lead you through the dungeons and the “Door of No Return.” The last door that many slaves passed through before being shipped to America. It is not known exactly how many slaves were deported to America, but the number runs into the millions.
