Lesotho - The Sani Pass is a spectacular mountain road and a highlight for travelers to Lesotho from South Africa’s Natal Drakensberg Park. It is the gateway to the “roof of Africa” that connects the spectacular Drakensberg landscape with the mountains in northern Lesotho. The Sani Pass is the only border post between KwaZulu-Natal and Lesotho. A 4x4 vehicle is needed for this road, especially in bad weather. Never underestimate the unpredictability of the weather in Lesotho. A common saying is that you can experience four seasons in one day, so be prepared. Lunch at the top of the Sani Pass is served in the highest pub in South Africa. In the past, the Sani Pass was a rough mule track. Cattle herders descended into the Eastern Highlands of old Basutoland in Natal. They traded mules for blankets, clothing, and cornmeal. A young man, David Alexander, dreamed of driving a 4-wheel-drive vehicle over the Sani Pass. He established a company specifically for this in 1955. Today it is a tourist route for adventurous travelers.
