Saint_Lucia - The Piton Management Area is a large natural reserve near the town of Soufrière. The two “Pitons,” volcanic peaks that rise over 700 meters side by side from the sea, are visible from almost everywhere on Saint Lucia. These two eroded remnants of lava domes—the Gros Piton and the Petit Piton—stand prominently in the volcanic landscape. The volcanic complex includes a geothermal field with sulfur springs. The combination of the twin Pitons against the backdrop of lush tropical vegetation and the varying topography, with the deep blue sea in the foreground, gives the area a unique natural beauty. Around the coral reefs just off the coast, many rare fish species can be found. On land, vegetation ranges from tropical moist forest to subtropical wet forest. No fewer than 148 plant species grow on Gros Piton and 97 on Petit Piton and the connecting ridge—including eight rare tree species. The Piton Management Area is also home to a variety of special bird species, native rodents, reptiles, and bats.
