Albania - The weather clears up at Butrint. The sun is shining and it’s quite hot—no sign of rain here. The ancient city of Butrint was founded around 500 BC on a small peninsula. Over time, it was expanded by the Romans, the Byzantines, and eventually the Venetians. After the war with the Ottomans, the city was destroyed and fell into decline. We wander among the ruins. The amphitheatre is well preserved and occasionally still hosts performances. Passing the remains of the palace, the forum, and common houses, we reach the Basilica. The side aisles of this church are still standing, though the roof is gone. The circular walk ends at the renovated castle. It was an impressive visit to this ancient city. Later in the afternoon, we drive to Gjirokaster. We don’t need to follow the coastal road, but we do have to cross a mountain range. On the other side, dark clouds loom. We’re getting used to the afternoon thunderstorms. Sure enough, as we enter Gjirokaster, a heavy downpour begins.

The Central Square of Tirana

The Old Ottoman City of Berat

The Old Quarter of Gjirokaster
Albania - From Fier, we head toward Gjirokaster. Part of the route is on an old, rough road, but much of it is on a new highway. Around 1:30 PM, we enter Gjirokaster. A very steep and narrow road takes us up to the castle via GPS. In low gear, we slowly drive uphill. ...
