Senegal - Gorée Island (Île de Gorée) is a small island off the coast of Dakar, the sprawling capital of Senegal. It’s an oasis of calm compared to the busy streets of Dakar. There are no cars on the island, and it is small enough to navigate easily on foot. Gorée Island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was once an important center for the transatlantic slave trade. The island’s main attraction is the Maison des Esclaves (House of Slaves), built by the Dutch in 1776 as a holding point for slaves. The house has been converted into a museum and is open every day except Monday. Inside, one can also see the “Door of No Return,” the final passage through which slaves were taken. Some critics question whether this small House of Slaves could have housed so many captives. There are several other interesting museums on the island, as well as a lively little pier full of seafood restaurants.
