Tunisia - Djerba is a Tunisian island located east of the mainland in the Gulf of Gabès in the Mediterranean Sea. The island’s capital is Houmt Souk, situated on the northern coast. Djerba is the largest island of Tunisia and is connected to the mainland by a 7 km-long causeway. In Houmt Souk, the main town of the island, about 62,500 people live. The island covers an area of 514 km², with a length of 28 kilometers and a width of 22 kilometers. Djerba is a popular holiday destination, offering a mild climate with plenty of sunshine and beautiful natural surroundings with many palm trees. The island also has lovely beaches. The local population is very hospitable. The northeastern coastal strip has long beaches such as Djerba Beach and Seguia Beach, with numerous hotels for tourists. Many Tunisian traditions are well preserved on the island, including crafts, traditional clothing, and other folklore. Naturally, tourist areas are also tailored to visitors. There are remains of various Roman constructions on the island, such as the Roman road at El-Kantara. One of the oldest and most famous synagogues in the world, the El Ghriba Synagogue, is located a few kilometers southwest of Houmt Souk. In 2002, Djerba made world news due to a bombing at this synagogue.
