Bolivia - Without any more flat tires, around half past three we drive onto the salt lake. A strange sensation. The lake most resembles a frozen and snow-covered lake. The enormous surface area (about one-fifth of the Netherlands) makes the lake and the journey across it very special. In a straight line, we drive toward Isla del Pescado, about three quarters of an hour over the salt lake. The Isla del Pescado, or cactus island, rises like a ghost ship in the middle of the lake above the salt. The island is fully covered with cacti, some as tall as about ten meters. The top of the island offers a beautiful view over the Salar de Uyuni. On all sides of the island, there is a view of salt. We still need to hurry to be back in time to see the sunset on the lake. To best see this, we walk from the island onto the lake and walk straight for about fifteen minutes. After a day in the jeeps, it is also nice to walk for a bit. Because the distance across the lake to the overnight spot is over thirty kilometers, the jeeps pick us up and we drive on to Jiriri. When we arrive at the small village on the edge of the lake at the foot of the volcano, it is already completely dark.
