Czech Republic - The UNESCO town of Český Krumlov looks as if it has come straight out of a fairy tale. The views over the lake and the town itself are an absolute highlight, with its medieval center of houses built haphazardly, town palaces, a monastery complex, and a castle at the top. In the hilly landscape of the foothills of the Šumava lies Český Krumlov (14,000 inhabitants), a romantic medieval town around which the Vltava River gracefully winds. Český Krumlov is the second largest tourist attraction in Bohemia after Prague. The center of Český Krumlov is surrounded by three meanders of the Vltava, and almost a kilometer further on, the river is almost back to the same place as at the beginning. Since 1989, restoration efforts have started at various locations. In 1993, UNESCO placed the town on the list of historic towns to receive financial support to restore their former glory. In summer, the old center is overrun by tourists, but it is especially atmospheric in winter. In peaceful calm, you can wander through the castle courtyards or stroll across the town square.
