Australia - The Sydney Opera House is a performing arts venue for opera and other music located in the city of Sydney, Australia. It has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2007. The idea to build the Sydney Opera House at Sydney Harbour began in 1955 with an international architectural competition. The winning design came from Danish architect Jørn Utzon, who is said to have sketched the concept freehand, without rulers or calculators. Utzon was passionate about sailing, and his design reflects that — the roof structures resemble both shells and the sails of a great ship. The building was officially opened in 1973 by Queen Elizabeth II, 14 years after construction began. It stands on Bennelong Point, a site that was once home to a tram depot. The Opera House includes not only an opera hall but also three other concert venues, as well as restaurants and bars. Construction posed several challenges, and Utzon left the project before it was completed, never returning to see the finished building. Despite the difficulties, the Sydney Opera House has become a global icon — as recognizable for Sydney as the Eiffel Tower is for Paris.
