Cameroon - Mount Cameroon, locally known as Mongo ma Ndemi ("Mountain of Greatness"), is the highest mountain in West Africa, reaching 4,040 meters. It is an active volcano and part of a volcanic line that runs through Cameroon and far into the Atlantic Ocean. The most recent eruptions occurred on March 28, 1999, and May 28, 2000. The lower slopes are covered in dense tropical forests. There are several routes up the mountain. The oldest and steepest path is the Guinness Trail, named after an annual marathon once sponsored by Guinness Beer. Porters and guides are mandatory on this 2–3 day trek. Basic huts and camps are available along the main routes. The main trail passes through farmland, rainforest, montane forest, savannah, and finally reaches the rocky summit.
