Hong Kong - The colourful Taoist sanctuary of the Wong Tai Sin Temple is one of the most well-known religious sites in Hong Kong. The temple is dedicated to Wong Tai Sin, a healing Taoist deity who, according to tradition, can grant wishes and cure illnesses. For both worshippers and visitors, the temple is a place where spirituality, ritual, and everyday urban culture come together. The origins of the temple date back to the early 20th century, when a small shrine was established for Wong Tai Sin. In the 1920s, the sanctuary was expanded and later relocated to its current site in Kowloon. Since then, it has grown into an important religious centre where Taoist, Buddhist, and Confucian traditions coexist. The temple’s architecture is strikingly colourful and richly decorated. Red pillars, golden roofs, and intricate wood carvings dominate the complex. The main halls are filled with altars, spirals of incense, and statues of gods and protective spirits. The scent of burning incense is constantly present in the air, enhancing the spiritual atmosphere. One of the most famous rituals in the temple is “kau cim,” a form of divination in which visitors shake bamboo sticks until one falls out. This stick is then interpreted by a temple priest, who explains a corresponding poem. Many people come here seeking guidance on love, health, or the future. Despite the surrounding urban bustle, the temple feels like a peaceful enclave. Amid the skyscrapers of Kowloon, Wong Tai Sin offers a place of reflection where tradition and modern city life meet in a unique way.
