Hong_Kong - The Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery is a unique and fascinating Buddhist attraction located in Sha Tin, in the New Territories of Hong Kong. Despite its name, it is not an official functioning monastery, as no monks live there. It’s a temple complex built in the 1950s by the devout Buddhist Yuet Kai, who is also buried on the grounds. The temple is located on a hillside, and to reach it, visitors must climb a long staircase of about 430 steps. Along both sides of this staircase are hundreds of life-size, golden arhat statues (enlightened disciples of the Buddha), each with a unique facial expression and posture. This climb alone is a visually and spiritually impressive experience. At the top lies the main complex, consisting of several halls, pavilions, and pagodas. The most striking structure is the nine-story pagoda, which visitors can climb for panoramic views over Sha Tin and the surrounding hills. The main temple hall houses thousands of small golden Buddha statues covering the walls—hence the name "Ten Thousand Buddhas Temple," though there are actually more than 13,000. At the heart of the temple stands the mummified body of Yuet Kai, displayed in a seated lotus position and covered in gold. This sacred relic is worshipped by many believers and forms one of the site’s main spiritual highlights. The atmosphere is peaceful and serene, with lush greenery, trickling streams, and traditional pavilions where one can meditate or simply relax. The temple attracts both local worshippers and tourists seeking a spiritual or cultural experience.
