Hong Kong - On Lantau Island, set in a lush mountainous landscape, lie two of the most impressive spiritual landmarks of Hong Kong: the Po Lin Monastery and the famous Tian Tan Buddha, also known as the Big Buddha. The Po Lin Monastery was founded in 1906 by three Buddhist monks from Jiangsu Province in China. Originally a simple and remote temple, it gradually developed into an important centre of Mahayana Buddhism. The monastery complex consists of colourful temple halls, incense pavilions, and serene courtyards where monks and visitors gather for prayer and meditation. The atmosphere is calm and spiritual, filled with the scent of incense and the soft sound of prayer bells. Directly opposite the monastery, on a hilltop, stands the imposing Tian Tan Buddha, completed in 1993. This bronze statue is about 34 metres high and is one of the largest outdoor seated Buddhas in the world. It is made up of 202 bronze pieces and weighs more than 250 tonnes. The Buddha sits in a meditative posture, facing south toward mainland China, symbolising harmony between humanity and nature. Visitors reach the statue via a long staircase of 268 steps, which is often seen as a spiritual journey in itself. Along the way, there are stunning views of the surrounding mountains and the sea. Around the base of the Buddha stand six smaller bronze statues offering tribute, symbolising the six perfections of Buddhism. Together, the Po Lin Monastery and the Big Buddha form one of the most serene and impressive places in Hong Kong, where nature, religion, and culture come together in perfect harmony.
