Morocco - Amtoudi is an off-the-beaten-track attraction for most tourists in Morocco and yet one of the most captivating stops to visit. The reason is simple: Amtoudi has one of the oldest and best-preserved granaries, or agadirs, as they are called in North Africa. Agadirs are no longer in use. They were built during times of bandits and rival tribes seeking each other’s riches. In this harsh region, nothing was more valuable than grain, dates, and gunpowder. The agadir of Amtoudi is 800 years old and remarkably well-preserved. Getting there is half the experience. To reach the agadir, one must follow a narrow path along a steep mountainside. You can also rent a donkey if preferred. However, note that riding up on a donkey or horse or walking the narrow trail can be intimidating. At some points, the path is less than thirty centimeters wide. The donkeys walk this trail daily and know it well. From the impressive agadir, you also have a beautiful view of the surroundings and the village of Amtoudi.
