Morocco - Taroudant is a Moroccan city located in the Sous Valley in the southern part of the country. It lies east of Agadir on the road to Ouarzazate and the Sahara Desert, and south of Marrakech. It is called the "Grandmother of Marrakech" because it resembles a smaller version of Marrakech, with surrounding city walls. In the 16th century, the Saadians briefly used Taroudant as their capital before relocating to Marrakech. Today, the town still exudes the atmosphere of a small fortified town along the old trade route. The city is known for its local crafts, including jewelry and carpets. Unlike Marrakech, nearly the entire city of Taroudant lies within the walls. The city walls are nearly 6 kilometers long and are reinforced with bastions and interrupted by nine gates, all of which remain intact. Today, the city functions clearly as a market town, with a large souk located near its two main squares, Assarag and Talmoklate. There is also a weekly souk outside the city walls, near what is set to become the university district.
