South_Africa - Soweto is South Africa’s most famous township, over a century old. It originated when tens of thousands of Black residents of Johannesburg were relocated there by the white authorities. Leaders such as Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu lived here. Soweto, an acronym for Johannesburg South-West Townships, is now home to over 3.5 million people. During the struggle against apartheid, Soweto was a hotbed of resistance and political activism. In 1976, students sparked riots against the regime, which spread across the country, paving the way to the end of apartheid. Years later, life has gradually improved for residents. More people now have access to electricity and water. Old huts are being replaced by solid houses with roads and street lighting. There are even small guesthouses, restaurants, shopping centers, and a new supermarket. Thousands of tourists visit Soweto annually, staying in Nelson Mandela’s former home and visiting the Hector Pieterson Museum and sites of major anti-apartheid battles. AIDS and unemployment remain the township’s biggest challenges today.
