Netherlands - The most famous painting in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam is The Night Watch. Officers and other militiamen of district II in Amsterdam, led by Captain Frans Banning Cocq and Lieutenant Willem van Ruytenburch, known as “The Night Watch,” painted by Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn, 1642. Rembrandt’s most famous and largest canvas was made for the Kloveniersdoelen, one of the meeting halls of the Amsterdam civic guard, the city’s militia. Rembrandt was the first to depict the figures in action in a group portrait. The captain, dressed in black, commands his lieutenant that the company must march. The militiamen prepare themselves. Using light, Rembrandt draws attention to important details, such as the captain’s hand gesture and the little girl in the background. She is the mascot of the militiamen.
