Sri_Lanka - Afterward, I head to the fort — the diplomatic district where many government buildings are located. I get out here and walk into the adjacent Patteh district, the commercial area. Immediately, I see countless little shops. I arrive at the Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque. This red-and-white striped mosque is one of the most distinctive buildings in Colombo. Through market streets, I walk to the Dutch Museum. Inside, it shows what life was like during the Dutch period. I continue to the Dutch Reformed Church of Wolvendaal, where Dutch naval heroes are buried. When I go looking for the Sri Muthu Vinayakar Kovil temples, I end up in a maze of alleyways. When it seems to dead-end, locals signal that I can continue. I enter a barely one-meter-wide alley, followed by several curious children. I follow the path between houses, greeting the surprised locals. I then realize I haven’t seen a single other tourist in all of Colombo — not at the market, not at the mosque, and not here in the streets. As I walk back toward the fort, it starts to drizzle. I duck into a local restaurant and order a Coke.

The fortified town of Galle
Sri_Lanka - Around three o'clock, I enter the fort of Galle, a defensive fort built by the Dutch. My hotel is located in the alleys within the fort. Ajbriy takes an extra loop to point out what there is to see. I estimate I can easily explore this on foot. The fort ...

The rock temples of Dambulla
Sri_Lanka - It rained well into the night, but when I step out of my cottage, it’s dry. Today I’m traveling from Sirigiya to the highlands of Kandy. After an hour’s drive, I arrive in Dambulla. In Dambulla lie five Buddhist cave temples. Right at the entrance, ...
The Temple of the Tooth Relic in Kandy
