Slovakia - Our first stop is the castle of Spišský. The ruins of this old castle lie strategically on a rocky outcrop. We can see the castle from far away — it’s no surprise this is one of the most photographed sights in Slovakia. The castle consists of three areas. The outer wall surrounds the lower yard. Around the entrance is the middle yard, and via a steep path we reach the gate to the upper castle. From the castle, there is a wide view of the surroundings. Thanks to the good weather, we can see far into the distance. On the horizon lie the Low and High Tatra mountain ranges, which form the border with Poland. At the foot of the Tatra Mountains lies the fortified town of Levoča. We park the car near the monumental Košice Gate. We think we’re parked legally and don't have to pay here, but since all signs are in Slovak, we’re not entirely sure. We take the risk. The old city center of Levoča is still surrounded by its original city walls. On the town square, we admire the beautiful facades of surrounding buildings. We visit the Lutheran church and the impressive old town hall. On a terrace, we order lunch. Even though it doesn’t seem very busy, it takes quite a while before our food arrives. The wait was worth it — Levoča’s specialty, a type of folded pancake with chicken, meat, and sauce, tastes excellent.
