Suriname - After breakfast, we cycle a short distance to Fort Nieuw Amsterdam. Fort Nieuw Amsterdam once served to protect the plantation from attackers. A prison was also located inside the fort. We get a tour through the cells and offices. We’re shown an old chest with a hidden keyhole. Only after some searching do we find the opening (and I’m not giving that away here!). The guide gives the tour hesitantly — you’d almost think it was his first time. Outside, near the cells, the guide says to the last person in the group, “Well, that’s it,” and walks off. There’s no time left to tip him. Outside, we walk past the remarkably low defense wall. We look at the powder magazines and return to the main entrance.
