Tanzania - Stone Town, the historic heart of Zanzibar City on Unguja Island, is a fascinating place where cultures, religions, and centuries of history meet. Located on Zanzibar’s west coast, Stone Town was a crucial trade center for spices, ivory, and tragically, slaves. Today, it is a living museum full of narrow streets, ornate wooden doors, Arab balconies, colorful markets, and colonial buildings, and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Stone Town feels like a labyrinth, with alleyways just wide enough for a motorbike or pedestrian. Time seems to stand still. The scent of cloves, cinnamon, and incense fills the air, children play football in the alleys, and the muezzin’s call echoes from the mosques. The blend of Arab, African, Persian, Indian, and European influences makes it uniquely authentic. The ornately carved wooden doors are centuries old and richly decorated, reflecting the status of their original owners. A sobering historical site is the former slave market, now home to the Slave Museum and Anglican Cathedral, with underground rooms where people were held in inhumane conditions. Another landmark is the House of Wonders (Beit-al-Ajaib), the largest 19th-century building, first with electricity and an elevator. The Forodhani Gardens host a nightly food market, offering Zanzibari pizza, grilled fish, chapati, and fresh sugarcane juice. Stone Town also hosts small museums, like Freddie Mercury’s birthplace, artisan shops, galleries, and tea houses, showcasing local culture.
