Tanzania - The Serengeti, a name derived from the Maasai word Siringet, literally means “Endless Plains.” It is a region of savannas and woodland landscapes in Africa, spanning northern Tanzania and southern Kenya, covering an area of about 30,000 km². Eighty percent of the region lies within Tanzania. Approximately 1.6 million herbivores and thousands of predators inhabit this vast ecosystem. The most common animals in this region include the blue wildebeest, Thomson’s gazelle, plains zebra, and African buffalo. The region is especially famous for the great migration that occurs each year around October, when about one and a half million herbivores move from the northern hills to the southern plains in search of water, due to the dry season. During this journey, they must cross the Mara River. After the rains return around April, the animals migrate back, taking a more westerly route. This phenomenon is known as a circular migration. The Serengeti is also home to the archaeologically significant Olduvai Gorge (sometimes incorrectly referred to as Oldupai Gorge), where some of the oldest known human fossils have been discovered. The Serengeti includes Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, the Ngorongoro Crater, the Maswa Game Reserve, and the Masai Mara Reserve in Kenya.
