Zambia - Livingstone Island plays an important role in Zambia’s history. In 1855, missionary and explorer David Livingstone viewed Victoria Falls from this island. At the time, the falls were called Mosi-Oa-Tunya, meaning “The Smoke that Thunders.” Later, the falls were renamed Victoria Falls after Queen Victoria. In 1995, Livingstone Island opened as an exclusive picnic location at the edge of the falls. Access depends on the Zambezi River water level; visitors can reach it by boat or by walking over exposed riverbeds. Due to its unique nature, the island accommodates only 16 guests, with a maximum of 60 visitors per day. Adventurous visitors can swim in the Devil’s Pool, a small lagoon near Livingstone Island, surrounded by rocks at the waterfall’s edge. Beside it, water plunges 103 meters. You can even look over the waterfall’s edge. Visiting Devil’s Pool does not require staying on Livingstone Island. It is accessible during the low-water season, from September to December.
