Moldova - From there, we continue driving north toward Soroca. Soroca is a city in the northeast of the Republic of Moldova, located on the right bank of the Dniester River, 160 km from the Moldovan capital, Chisinau. Soroca lies in the northeast of Moldova, close to the border with Ukraine. Soroca was an important city during the Middle Ages. The Soroca Fortress, located near the Ukrainian border, has been restored in the old style. The fort was remodeled into its current form by Transylvanian architects between 1543 and 1546, during the reign of Petru Rareș. The structure is perfectly circular and has five towers, evenly spaced. In one of the towers, we can climb stairs to the top level. From there, we have a view over the river, the city, and the surrounding area. Soroca is also the unofficial capital of the Roma community. The Roma people live in the hills around the city, mostly in large, ostentatious houses. At the market in the city center, everyone is busy shopping. No one seems to pay any attention to us—probably tourists come here more often. We leave Soroca via the hills, seeing Roma houses on both sides of the road.
