Costa_Rica - Just past Liberia lies the active Rincón de la Vieja volcano. The route to the volcano’s summit is closed due to volcanic activity. I choose to walk along the hot springs and mud volcanoes. As soon as I enter the nature reserve, I smell the pungent sulfur odor of the volcano. The path is sometimes slippery due to the recent heavy rainfall. Mud fills the tread under my shoes, making walking difficult. Carefully, I climb over rocks and tree trunks. I cross a river via a suspension bridge. Further on, I photograph a beautiful waterfall. The water cascades down in several streams. The first pool is a boiling hot spring. The sulfur steam drifts between the surrounding trees. Further along the route are several more hot springs and mud volcanoes. Gas bubbles rise through the heavy clay. I always find this a beautiful and fascinating sight. On my way back, I hear thunder in the distance. Just as I reach the endpoint, it starts to rain. I quickly walk to the bus at the parking lot but still get quite wet. What luck that this shower only fell now. Rain would have made the path even more slippery.
