Indonesia - Today I leave Yogyakarta and head to the Hindu Prambanan temple, located 18 kilometers outside the city. This temple, from the same era as Borobudur, was severely damaged during the 2006 earthquake. The main temple, dedicated to Shiva, largely collapsed. Restoration took years and was only completed last year. My first view of the temple is amazing. The intricately carved towers rise beautifully against the clear blue sky—a joy to behold. A guide takes me around the complex. He explains there are three main towers: one each for Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma. In the past, over 200 smaller temples surrounded the main complex—only two were restored. It’s hard to imagine how the original complex must have looked. I climb the steep stone steps into the main temple, where a statue of the four-armed Shiva stands. Walking around the temple, I see a staircase on each side leading to a chamber with a deity. I also visit the nearby temple of Vishnu, where a statue of the elephant-headed Ganesha is located. I’m very impressed. I honestly believe that Borobudur is unfairly given all the fame—this temple deserves world wonder status as well.
