Indonesia - My alarm wakes me just before seven. Today I’m going to wash elephants – an experience I’m really looking forward to. Suka greets me enthusiastically when I arrive at the restaurant. It’s about a half-hour walk to the elephant camp. The elephants are trained to patrol the forest, and they’re washed twice a day, with tourists welcome to help. When I arrive, the elephants are already ready to walk down to the water. I walk beside them down the sloping path. It’s fascinating to see how they place their feet – it seems as if their feet mold to the surface before they shift their weight. At the river, the elephants wade into the water. Because of the depth and the current, they submerge completely and resurface a little further downstream. Then they’re given the command to lie down. With a brush in hand, I scrub Theo, the male elephant. He lies still while I stroke his trunk. His skin feels rough. I pour water over him and scrub his skin. It’s great fun. With a big splash, Theo rolls over so I can scrub his other side. After washing, it’s time for a “shower.” One of the elephants sucks up water with its trunk and sprays it over me. Then Theo brings his trunk close to my face and blows warm air to dry off. Finally, I get to feed the elephants – bananas and bamboo. Theo takes a banana from my hand with his trunk and puts it in his mouth. For the second banana, he opens his mouth wide. I place the banana directly inside. Funny!
