Pakistan - Gilgit-Baltistan is known for its rich history and impressive architectural heritage. The forts and palaces in this region reflect the cultural, strategic, and historical importance of an area that has long been a crossroads of trade and power. The Baltit Fort, located in the Hunza Valley, is one of the most iconic historical structures in the region. This fort, over 700 years old, was built on a strategic hilltop and served as the residence of the Mirs of Hunza. It features a Tibetan-Ladakhi architectural style, with wooden balconies overlooking the valley. The Altit Fort, older than the Baltit Fort, is situated in the same valley and was once the power center of the Mirs of Hunza. This 900-year-old fort stands on a cliff overlooking the Hunza River. In Skardu, you'll find the impressive Skardu Fort, also known as Kharpocho Fort. It was built in the 16th century by Ali Sher Khan Anchan, the ruler of Baltistan. The Shigar Fort, also known as “Fong-Khar,” is located in the Shigar Valley. This 400-year-old palace was the royal residence of the Raja of Shigar. The fort is a beautiful blend of Balti and Islamic architecture, with stone foundations and wooden structures. The Khaplu Palace, situated in the serene Khaplu Valley, was built in the 19th century and was the palace of the Raja of Khaplu. It is one of the finest examples of Tibetan-Balti architecture in the region. The palace has now been converted into a hotel and museum. Its interior features exquisite wood carvings and provides a glimpse into royal life in times past.
