Tuvalu - Fongafale is the capital and largest settlement of the Oceanic island nation of Tuvalu. It is also the name of the island over which this village stretches. About 3,500 people live in Fongafale. Fongafale is the only settlement on the eponymous island, which is the largest island of Funafuti, protected on the east side by a storm bank. Vaiaku, the southwesternmost district, is the main part of Fongafale, although it is the least populated. Government and administrative buildings are located here. Off the coast of Fongafale, a World War II shipwreck can be visited. There is a hospital (Princess Margaret Hospital), several guesthouses, the country’s only hotel (Vaiaku Lagi Hotel), a seaplane landing site, the only (international) airport, and seven small lakes. In 2004, four taxis operate on Fongafale. In the north of Fongafale is the Tengako Peninsula. In the east, a storm bank protects the entire village. The island is also surrounded by a coral reef. From Fongafale, boats can depart to the other islands of Tuvalu or to other islands of Funafuti, including the two inhabited islands, Motuloa and Funafala.
