Iceland - At 8:30 a.m., we walk to the harbor for a whale-watching tour. We board the Náttfari, a former fishing vessel now fitted with benches. Masks are mandatory onboard due to Icelandic law, as social distancing isn’t possible, explains our guide, Laugey. We’re also given waterproof and windproof suits. Though the weather is fine, it can be chilly at sea. Soon we leave the harbor. There are just over sixty people aboard. It seems like a lot, but there’s enough space to move around. Laugey explains how to locate the whales: twelve o’clock is straight ahead, three o’clock is starboard, and nine o’clock is port. After half an hour, the captain spots a whale. A spout of water reveals its location. It turns out to be two humpbacks swimming together. Occasionally, they surface. It’s an incredible sight to see these massive creatures up close. After a few minutes at the surface, they dive again in search of food, their tails rising above the water. Usually, they stay underwater for six or seven minutes, though they can remain submerged for up to forty. Luckily, we spot them again a few hundred meters away. We see them surface several more times. Whales migrate to Iceland in summer for its food-rich waters and return to the Caribbean in winter to mate in warmer seas.
