United States - Yellowstone is one of the world’s most important sites for studying and appreciating the evolutionary history of the Earth. The park has an unparalleled collection of surface geothermal activity worldwide, thousands of hot springs, mud pots, fumaroles, and more than half of the world’s active geysers. The vast natural forest of Yellowstone National Park covers nearly 9,000 km²—96% lies in Wyoming, 3% in Montana, and 1% in Idaho. Yellowstone contains half of all known geothermal features on more than 10,000 sites worldwide. It also has the world’s largest concentration of more than 300 geysers—two-thirds of all geysers globally. The national park was established in 1872 and is known for its wildlife, such as grizzly bears, wolves, bison, and elk. Yellowstone National Park is a protected area of significant geological phenomena. It is also a unique place of geothermal forces, natural beauty, and wild ecosystems where rare and endangered species thrive. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the few remaining intact large ecosystems in the northern temperate zone of the Earth.
