Cyprus - The United Nations Buffer Zone in Cyprus is a demilitarized zone, guarded by the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus, established in 1974 following the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. The zone stretches over more than 112 km along what is known as the Green Line and covers an area of 346 square kilometers. The sealed-off zone has grown into a refuge for wildlife on Cyprus. The zone extends from the western part around Kato Pyrgos to the east, just south of Famagusta. It cuts through the center of the old city of Nicosia. It divides the city into a southern and northern part. The width of the zone varies from 3.3 meters in the center of Nicosia to 7.4 kilometers near the village of Athienou. The buffer zone is home to about 10,000 people, and there are several villages and farms located within the zone. The village of Pyla is the only village in Cyprus where Greeks and Turks live side by side. Turkish troops built a barrier on the northern side of the zone, mainly consisting of barbed wire fences, concrete wall segments, watchtowers, anti-tank ditches, and minefields. This line is also referred to as the Attila Line on some maps, named after the Turkish code name for the military intervention in 1974: Operation Atilla.
