Latvia - The border crossing a little further on is much less spectacular. Juozaf still needs to slow down a bit, but since there is no control, we easily enter Latvia. Just over the border, near Pilsrundale, lies Rundale Palace in the middle of open fields. This beautiful Baroque palace was built as a summer residence for the Duke of Courland. The palace was designed by Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli. Rastrelli is also the designer of the Winter Palace in the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg. The palace fell into serious disrepair during the occupation but is now being renovated. In the throne, ballroom, and banquet halls, it is once again possible to see how life used to be here in all its splendor. The palace garden has also been replanted. From the well-maintained garden, the palace looks even more beautiful.
