Panama - The Panama Canal is an 81-kilometer-long canal in Central America that runs through the Isthmus of Panama and connects the Caribbean Sea with the Pacific Ocean. The canal is a vital artery for intercontinental transport because it eliminates the need to sail around South America. A ship traveling from New York to San Francisco covers a distance of 9,500 kilometers via the canal—less than half of the 22,500 kilometers via Cape Horn. The Pacific Ocean lies west of the Atlantic, but the layout of the canal is somewhat reversed: the Atlantic side of the canal is northwest of the Pacific side. This is due to the irregular shape of the isthmus. It is commonly said that the border between North and South America runs through the canal, although it can also be drawn along the political boundary between Panama and Colombia.
