Spain - Seville Cathedral is one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in the world and the impressive religious heart of Seville. The cathedral was built on the site of a former large mosque from the Moorish period. After the Christian reconquest of Seville in 1248, the rulers decided to construct an enormous cathedral that would reflect the wealth and power of the city. According to tradition, they wanted “to build a church so large that everyone would think we were mad.” Construction began in the 15th century and lasted for more than a hundred years. The result is a monumental building with impressive vaults, massive columns, and richly decorated chapels. Inside, it contains one of the largest church interiors in the world. The vast space, the coloured light streaming through stained-glass windows, and the golden decorations give the cathedral an overwhelming and awe-inspiring atmosphere. One of its most famous features is the La Giralda, the iconic bell tower of Seville. This tower was originally the minaret of the former mosque and combines Islamic architecture with later Christian additions. Instead of stairs, a ramp winds upward to the top, allowing guards in the past to ride horses to the summit. From the tower, there are spectacular views over Seville. The cathedral also houses the tomb of Christopher Columbus, although there is still debate about the exact location of his remains. In addition, it contains an enormous collection of religious artworks, paintings, and a magnificent gilded altarpiece, one of the largest in the world. Seville Cathedral is not only a religious centre but also a symbol of Andalusia’s rich history. The building reflects the encounter between Islamic and Christian cultures and is one of Spain’s most important historical monuments.
