Scotland - It’s cloudy but dry when we get off the bus. We’re standing right in front of Edinburgh Castle. The castle holds a dominant position in the old city of Edinburgh. From the parking area, I can see the modern buildings of the current city center on the opposite hill. Looking the other way, I see the Royal Mile—a street of about one and a half kilometers through the old town, connecting Edinburgh Castle to the Royal Palace. Along this route, several medieval buildings stand. The atmosphere of old Edinburgh can still be felt here, despite the many tourists. I cross the stone entrance bridge and pass through the castle gate. The courtyard is an open square about fifty by fifty meters. In the corners, you can visit the tower and various rooms. I climb the stone steps from room to room. At the left tower, there’s a long queue of tourists. It leads to the Crown Jewels. I join the back of the line. Slowly, the crowd shuffles toward the display cases. The golden jewels and the beautiful crown shine brightly. A wonderful sight. From the castle, we continue our walk along the Royal Mile. Along the way, we pass the Tolbooth Kirk, the prison, the house of John Knox, and Tolbooth House. Eventually, at the bottom, I take a photo through the gates of Holyrood House, the former palace of the Queen of Scotland.
