Gibraltar - The Rock of Gibraltar is an impressive limestone rock that rises at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, within the territory of Gibraltar. The rock dominates the surrounding landscape and has for centuries served as a strategic landmark between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Due to its location, Gibraltar has played an important military and maritime role in European history. One of the most fascinating features of the rock is its limestone caves, the most famous of which is St Michael’s Cave. This cave was formed over thousands of years by water erosion and contains impressive stalactites and stalagmites. Its natural “cathedral-like” interior is enhanced by atmospheric lighting and is now also used for concerts and events. During the Second World War, the cave was even prepared as an emergency hospital, further increasing its historical significance. The rock is also famous for its population of wild monkeys, the Barbary macaques. These monkeys are the only wild monkeys found in Europe. They live freely on the rock and are accustomed to human presence, allowing visitors to observe them up close. According to a local legend, Gibraltar will remain British as long as the monkeys stay on the rock, which adds to their cultural symbolism. At the southern end of the rock lies Europa Point, the southernmost viewpoint of Gibraltar. From here, there are wide views over the Strait of Gibraltar, with Africa visible on clear days. Europa Point is also home to the striking Trinity Lighthouse, which warns ships navigating the busy and narrow passage between continents.
