Denmark - The statue of the Little Mermaid is a world-famous statue in the Danish capital, Copenhagen. It represents the main character in the fairy tale The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen. The mermaid statue was made by Edvard Eriksen (1876–1959), commissioned by Carl Jacobsen, the founder of Carlsberg. It is 1.25 meters tall and was placed on a rock in the harbor on August 23, 1913. It has become one of the main tourist attractions in Copenhagen. On April 24, 1964, the statue was beheaded. This act was later claimed by the artist Jørgen Nash. Since then, the statue has been vandalized and damaged several times. Furthermore, it has been dressed up multiple times. At least twice, it has worn a burqa, and in May 2007, it was adorned with a headscarf. Perhaps the statue will be placed further out in the water so that it is harder to reach.
