Hungary - We continue our route via the highway toward Miskolc, a city in northeastern Hungary. Because of the time difference, we arrive around 11:30 a.m. at the edge of town. At an ATM, we withdraw some cash—not too much, since we’re only spending one day in Hungary. With forints in hand, we drive into the mountains toward the town of Lillafüred, home to the István dripstone caves. The parking lot is crowded, as many Hungarians are also out enjoying this Sunday in the mountains. After some effort, we manage to get a ticket from the machine, which only offers Hungarian instructions. At the entrance to the caves, a tour is just about to start. We quickly buy tickets. The man at the booth tells us the tour is only in Hungarian, but he gives us an English information sheet. We head straight into the cave. The limestone caves are 710 meters long. In 1913, a dog fell into a shaft, and during the rescue, the caves were discovered. During the war, they served as a shelter. They reopened to the public in 1955. The rock formations are beautifully lit. We can’t understand anything the guide is saying. It’s amusing to see everyone’s heads turn in different directions as the guide shifts topics. We received a leaflet at the ticket booth, but it’s too dark to read. Since we’re not following the narration anyway, we take our time to take pictures—photos are allowed, but no flash, as we were told. The dripstone caves are stunning. After about half an hour, the tour ends, and we exit via the same route.

The Cave Bath of Miskolctapolca
Hungary - In one of the suburbs of Miskolc lies the Cave Bath of Miskolctapolca. When we arrive, it’s quite busy. At the parking lot near the bath, a boy tells us we can park for 2,000 forints, or for 800 per hour in a lot behind us. That lot also looks pretty ...
