Portugal - At the highest point of the district, I wait for tram 28. I don’t have to wait long. The characteristically small yellow tram comes and goes frequently. I buy a ticket from the driver. It’s crowded on the tram. I find a standing spot just behind the driver, giving me a great view of how the tram navigates downhill through the streets. When I try to photograph the driver, he reacts angrily. “I’m not a monument,” he says. I hesitate for a moment, thinking he might be joking, but he clearly isn’t. I quickly put my camera away. As the tram climbs up the other side of the center, the streets become narrower. Some are so narrow that only a single track is available for both directions. The tram traffic is controlled by traffic lights. When the light turns green, the driver sets tram 28 in motion. The yellow tram crawls through the narrow streets along the single track. On both sides, laundry hangs from the houses to dry. The tram passes by closely. Tourists quickly grab their cameras to capture tram 28 in these tight alleyways. It’s quite a sight. The tram reaches the end of the single-track section without any issues. On the other side, another tram is already waiting. Line 28 is an icon in Lisbon. Every tourist takes a ride on it at some point. At the final stop past the castle, I get off again. What a fun experience.
