Portugal - Lisbon is the capital of Portugal and lies along the Tagus River. The city offers a rich mix of history, atmosphere, and culture. Built on seven hills, Lisbon features some steep inclines. To navigate these, the city has not only standard trams but also special elevators and cable cars. The Alfama district is one of Lisbon’s oldest neighborhoods. Nestled against the castle hill, Alfama remained largely intact during the devastating 1755 earthquake. Its steep, winding streets still form a maze-like quarter. At the top of the hill sits the Castelo de São Jorge. From its walls, visitors are rewarded with stunning views over Lisbon’s center, the Tagus River, and the opposite riverbank. Bairro Alto, the “high neighborhood,” is one of the city’s most picturesque areas and perfect for a leisurely stroll. There’s always a coffee shop or an affordable restaurant nearby if you need a break.
