England - Tower Bridge is one of the most important buildings in London. Construction began in 1886, and after eight years, Tower Bridge was completed. The opening was in 1894. Tower Bridge was designed by Sir Horace Jones (1819–1887), who was the city architect of London at the time. Tower Bridge has been used as a bridge for vehicles and pedestrians, which was true then and remains so today. Water traffic has priority over other traffic, so other traffic must yield to water traffic. Until 1976, the lifting mechanism was powered by steam. Now, the towers with pinnacles and the walkway form the lifting mechanism to raise the bridge deck when a large ship needs to pass. The busy shipping traffic has almost disappeared, and the bridge now only opens on occasions such as visits by navy ships or special events. They wanted Tower Bridge to look like an old bridge, not a modern one. To achieve this old look, they used neo-Gothic style and used no modern materials but stone and steel. The bridge was completed in 1894.
